In the Belvedere Museum, Vienna, in The Winterpalais hung the largest collection worldwide of Gustav Klimt's work. Garish and ornamental as they were, I found the works tolerable but overrated. I can appreciate his ability to abandon realism and historical approaches to subject matter, and his repeating use of shapes to imply motion and magnify the subjects of the poem. Yet nonetheless the paintings seemed insubstantial, with too much colour and decoration for me to fully enjoy.
