the base paper had large newspapers layered on top, then a thin white paint covered them to cause a white washed background. I then carefully lay the ripped out book pages in a graphical manner, and blue-tacked them onto the paper.

taking extra caution to stick them straight, I stuck down the book pages. the books varied from historical journals to biology text-books. I took care to evenly spread out pages with images, different sizes and different colours so that the eye isn't drawn to any particular section

I initially marked out the shape of the child's head, arm and the background with a thin biro then used messy cross hatching in the style of Ian Murphy using a biro to draw the background rotting apples in the image.

after continuously cross hatching the apples and starting the child's shoulder and arm, and used some splashes of diluted turquoise ink to stretch the boundaries of drawing and introduce some colour.

I then used cross-hatching to border the face and started touching on the facial features of the child, but leaving spaces so the eye isn't drawn solely to the face of the child and is evenly distributed to the entire drawing. I also added splashes of pink and purple ink to add colour.

I continued adding ink and cross hatching on the book pages taking care not to draw on the newspaper with the exception of the face so that the drawing has a grid-like feel.

I used white paint to highlight and heavy black ink to shadow.
