Scroll down to see all of Ian Murphy's works

From the 2nd october-8th Ian Murphy visited St Albans High School for girls as our artist in residence. He was an architecturally based artist. His work is mainly drawing techniques based on either Venetian architecture or the Orient. He taught us his techniques of drawing through individual attention, drawing, workshops and explanations of his own works. I was greatly inspired by the fluidity of his marks and the dramatic tones he could create with just a biro and some water to dilute it.

His shaped works are always structured and he often drew with grids to ensure the proportion and exactitude remained constant.

Below are some photos I took of his sketchbooks. These interested me more than his large scale works as Ian Murphy was an artist orientated around sketching which is apparent in his drawings more than in his larger pieces. His techniques displayed below is what he tried to teach us in his workshops. He used ink to create marks yet varied the tone by pressing harder or shading more marks in areas of shadow.

His main techniques were drawing on top of pieces of writing or paper, and watercolour pens.
